Everyone’s Favourite Ambassador Will Soon Get An Electric Makeover And We Can’t Keep Calm!

The Ambassador is not just a mere car for us Indians. It is an icon and an irreplaceable part of the country’s history. Manufactured by Hindustan Motors from 1958 to 2014, it is the first and longest produced car in India.

Modelled on Britain’s Morris Oxford, the Ambassador was discontinued due to lack of demand and debt of the company.

ICYMI, French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroen acquired Ambassador in the year 2017. Now, NDTV Auto reports that the brand is planning to re-launch the beloved car in an electric (EV-only) format. It is likely that the company will launch an SUV style model after 2022 and then introduce a premium hatchback as well.

Ambassador’s all-electric avatar might share some features with the DS3 Crossback E-Tense (like the e-powertrain).

PSA Group is also undertaking a feasibility study to determine if the revamped Ambassador can be exported from 2023. The target markets are said to be Commonwealth nations with an Indian population and right-hand-drive.

Some portals have been reporting that the all-new Ambassador will look like the Peugeot E-Legend but there is no official word on the car design.

The aim of this revamp is to make Ambassador profitable once again. And we have to agree, a resurrected electric version of the legendary car sounds very, very interesting.
