Alia Bhatt, Hrithik Roshan On Oscars Academy List Of New Members, Hansal Mehta Reacts

In an official statement, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited 819 artists and executives who have “distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures”. The claimed that the class of 2020 consists of 45% women and 36% of people of colour in a bid to boost the diversity of Oscar nominees.

Among the 819 artists who have been invited are Bollywood actors Alia Bhatt and Hrithik Roshan, reports NDTV. The Academy list acknowledged Alia for her role in ‘Gully Boy’ and ‘Raazi’ while Hrithik for his performance in ‘Super 30’ and ‘Jodhaa Akbar’.

Other Indian artists who have been invited by the Academy are documentary filmmakers Nishtha Jain and Amit Madheshiya, designer Neeta Lulla, casting director Nandini Shrikent, visual effects supervisors Vishal Anand and Sandeep Kamal.

According to Hindustan Times, Hansal Mehta, who has directed laud-worthy films like ‘Aligarh’ and ‘City Lights’, took to Twitter to react to the Academy invitees.

“Nepotistic Academy,” he called it.

There were some who agreed with what Hansal Mehta had to say. People highlighted how there are other more-talented actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Pankaj Tripathi who deserved to have their performances globally recognised.

However, there were also some, including BBC Journalist Haroon Rashid who pointed out that Alia and Hrithik made the cut out of sheer talent and excellent performances.

Nevertheless, we congratulate Alia Bhatt and Hrithik Roshan for making it to the list and taking Indian cinema towards global recognition!
