14th June 2018 marked the beginning of the FIFA World Cup inviting the world to witness a month long of world-class football, overflowing emotion and intense drama. To cut it short, the grandest event in the world of sports had arrived and how!
But for a certain landlocked Asian country, 14th June was of greater significance. Yes, we are talking about Afghanistan, who were about to step into their first ever Test match after being granted as ‘Full Members’ by the ICC in June 2017. And against whom? The mighty Indians.
On the game front, India maintained their class as the number one ranked side in the longest version of the game by thrashing the debutants by an innings and 262 runs.
Led by skipper Ajinkya Rahane, India registered a mammoth total of 474 runs to which Afghanistan could manage only 109 and 103 in their first and second innings respectively.
But more than India’s phenomenal display on the field, a certain gesture from stand-in skipper, Ajinkya Rahane, showed us why the sport was the real winner in the clash. At the end of the presentation ceremony, Rahane asked Afghanistan captain Asghar Stanikzai and his team to pose with the winner’s trophy alongside the Indian team.

What a brilliant gesture from #TeamIndia to ask @ACBofficials players to pose with them with the Trophy. This has been more than just another Test match #SpiritofCricket #TheHistoricFirst #INDvAFG @Paytm pic.twitter.com/TxyEGVBOU8

Rahane is class.🙏🏻 The match was beyond a win or loss, specially the kinda history & friendship we share. The Indian crowd showed so much love to our team, home away from home.❤️ Long live Afghanistan & India’s friendship. #HistoricTest #INDvAFG

And perhaps this is why we call it – The Gentleman’s Game.
