Melting glaciers, rising temperatures, forest fires, extreme droughts and floods serve as evidence to the fact that the climate change is real. While it is a good sign that awareness about this crisis is spreading at a steady pace, it is true that not many people are convinced that our environment is in danger.
In an effort to send a serious message about climate change, 50-year-old endurance swimmer Lewis Pugh from England recently swam a stretch of a river in the Antarctic under an ice sheet, reports The Indian Express.
The river was just beneath the largest glacier on the planet and he swam through it wearing nothing but swimming trunks, a cap and goggles.
According to BBC, Pugh spent 10 minutes and 17 seconds under the water and claimed that the temperature of the water was just above zero degrees.
In a tweet, Pugh claimed that the swim was “the most beautiful and terrifying experience” of his life. In another tweet he said:
“I swam here in East Antarctica to bring you this message: Having witnessed the rapid melting in this region, I have no doubt that we are facing a climate emergency…Time is running out.”
Have a look at his tweets here:
East Antarctica is the coldest place on earth, and yet I was able to swim down a river under the ice-sheet. It was the most beautiful and terrifying experience of my life, and comes with an important message for us all. https://t.co/kl3eAkgXcS Please share. #Antarctica2020 pic.twitter.com/is1KK4MvEH

At the end to help me to safety is Senator Slava Fetisov from Russia. Slava was the the greatest ice hockey defenceman in history. He always tells me “our world now needs more defenders and protectors.” #Antarctica2020 pic.twitter.com/y5PwtqQNLp

Here’s a video of his experience:
¿Sabías que hay más de 65.000 lagos supraglaciares en la #Antártica a causa del calentamiento global?
En una proeza sin precedentes, el Embajador de los #Océanos de #UNEP @LewisPugh nadó en uno de ellos para exigir la protección del continente blanco.
