21-Month-Old Toddler Powered Through 15 Months Of Treatment & Beat Stage 4 Cancer!

For most of us, being a two-year-old kid was one of the best phases of our lives. We were able to behave like we wanted to. We were able to throw tantrums to get whatever we wanted to. And we didn’t need to take care of what’s happening in the whole wide world. However, for 21-month-old Molly Hughes, life is radically different.

According to CNN, Molly Hughes from Kentucky was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2017. And that was followed by 15 months of gruelling treatment. Molly’s mother, Chelsea Hughes, said,

“We’re just thankful that she made it through all that treatment. It was tough. She got really, really sick. The treatments are just so harsh on (children’s) bodies.”

Molly was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that affects the nerve cells. By the time doctors found it, it had spread throughout her whole body. However, with the help of chemotherapy, surgery, stem cell transplants, immunotherapy and radiation, she was able to kick cancer’s butt.

Neuroblastoma has a high risk of relapse. So, Molly will be needing scans every three months for the next five years. In addition to that, she’ll be given a new trial drug to prevent the relapse. But her mother’s happy that she has made it through,

“We were just so relieved. She’s happy and playful and just doing normal things again, but we still have to keep our guard up. We still need prayers for a while.”

Given how Molly had an IV (intravenous) in her chest, she couldn’t get wet and hence bathing was difficult. But now since the treatment is over, she will be going swimming for the first time with her family.

Cancer is a kind of disease that we can never fully prepare for. When it comes, we’ve to show the kind of courage and grit this 21-month-old girl has shown, and battle it with everything we’ve got. So, here’s to hoping that Molly has a healthy life ahead of her.
