It was a star-studded affair at the 77th Golden Globe Awards that concluded yesterday at The Beverly Hilton Hotel, LA, California. From five-time Golden Globes’ host Ricky Gervais roasting the A-listers of Hollywood to Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘beeped out’ speech on winning the best actor award to Jennifer Aniston cracking up on Brad Pitt’s acceptance speech, to celebs using the global platform to talk about several issues, the award function saw many such memorable moments.

1. Ricky Gervais made the audiences ‘laugh at their own expense’ through his opening monologue.

The fifth time host of the Globe Awards, Ricky Gervais kickstarted the event by roasting the who’s who of the fraternity. Although there was some cringing and squirming in the audiences, but he nailed it with his wit and humour at the event. Tom Hanks’s reaction to Ricky’s monologue has also inspired memes online.

2. Brad Pitt’s bromance with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Brad Pitt wins the Golden Globe for the best supporting actor. Referring to Leonardo as “LDC” in his acceptance speech he said, “He’s an all-star, he’s a gem, and I wouldn’t be here without you, man.” The ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ actor even made a Titanic reference to thank his co-star Leonardo DiCaprio and joked, “Still, I would’ve shared the raft.” His bromance has inspired memes too.

3. Kate McKinnon’s moving tribute to Ellen DeGeneres.

Ellen DeGeneres received the Carol Burnett Award for achievement in television and American actress and comedian Kate McKinnon presented her the trophy. Kate gave a touching tribute to Ellen and stated how DeGeneres ‘paved the way for her and other openly queer actors in Hollywood.’ “She risked her entire life and her entire career in order, to tell the truth, and she suffered greatly for it. And if I hadn’t seen her on TV, I would have thought, “I could never be on TV. They don’t let L.G.B.T. people on TV.” And more than that, I would have gone on thinking that I was an alien and that I maybe didn’t even have a right to be here. So thank you, Ellen, for giving me a shot. A shot at a good life,” she added.

4. Russell Crowe’s speech on climate change read by Jennifer Aniston.

Russell Crowe was awarded the best actor in a limited series for his performance in ‘The Loudest Voice’. But Russell wasn’t present to accept the trophy himself. Presenter Jennifer Aniston, however, read the speech he gave it to her ‘in case he wins’. “Crowe wasn’t able to attend due to the raging wildfires in Crowe’s home country of Australia,” Aniston said. “Make no mistake. The tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy, and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is,” said Jen on behalf of Russell.

5. Tom Hanks gave a teary speech as he received the Cecil N. DeMille Award.

Actor and producer Tom Hanks made everyone teary-eyed as he received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes. He thanked his wife and children also recognized directors who have influenced his work. He even gave some life advice to his friends from the fraternity. “Showing up on time is one of the greatest liberating acts you can give yourself,” he said.

6. Most parts of Joaquin Phoenix’s speech was muted as he dropped the ‘F-bombs’.

One of the most anticipated awards was Joaquin Phoenix receiving the trophy for the best actor. The quirky actor hence delivered a speech that was expected from him. But most parts of his speech was censored as the ‘Joker’ actor dropped the ‘F-bombs’. “Contrary to popular belief, I don’t want to rock the boat. But the boat is f—— rocked,” Phoenix said. He even praised the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for their “bold move of making tonight plant-based.”

7. Jason Momoa ditched the formal dress code.

Jason Momoa took his velvet jacket off at the award function after he presented the award for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a series.

Momoa was spotted sitting at his table in a tightly fitted tank top showing off his big muscles. Later in the day, the “Aquaman” was also spotted with his hair tied in a man-bun. Momoa was also seen enjoying a burger.

8. Ansel Elgort sang while presenting an award, wore glitter eyeshadow and rocked an all-white manicure.

American actor, singer, and DJ Ansel Elgort showed-off his skills as he got on stage to present the award for the best original song with Dakota Fanning. He did what nobody expected, he sang. Instead of just calling the nominees as everyone would do, Elgort decided to try something new and delivered his line via song. He sang “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from Rocketman. Elgort even reportedly wore glitter eyeshadow and rocked an all-white manicure.

9. Patricia Arquette highlighted the tensions going between the US and Iran.

As Patricia Arquette accepted her ‘best performance by an actress in a supporting role’ award for ‘The Act’, she highlighted the tensions going between the US and Iran. “We’re not going to look back on this night in the history books. We will see a country on the brink of war in the United States of America.” She even spoke about the deadly Australian fire that killed half a billion animals.

10. ‘Parasite’ director Bong Joon-ho gave his acceptance speech in Korean.

The movie ‘Parasite’ won for Best Foreign Film. Its director Bong Joon-Ho took the opportunity to avert everyone’s attention to foreign-language films. Through his translator, he said, “Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”

11. Michelle Williams makes a passionate pro-choice speech.

While picking up the award for best performance by an actress in a limited series for ‘Fosse/Verdon’, Michelle Williams gave a heart-warming speech about women’s rights. “I wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a woman’s right to choose. To choose when to have my children, and with whom,” she said. She even encouraged women to vote. “Women are the largest voting body in the country. Let’s make it look more like us.”
