11 Acts That You Might Not Even Know Was Illegal

Most of us are law-abiding citizens. We try to follow the law and try not to break it. But often due to lack of awareness there are some rules that we often break.

Here are some of the activities that you might be doing without knowing that it’s illegal.
 

1. Keeping mannequins wearing lingerie for display.

In lieu of the Provisions of the Indecent Representation of Women(prohibition) Act 1986, keeping mannequins wearing lingerie for display is not allowed.

Keeping mannequins for display is a common thing in India. But you would be quite amazed to know that mannequins displaying lingerie are illegal in our country. According to our government, the act is obscene and illegal.

So, if you have a shop that sells lingerie try not to keep mannequins for display.

The violation of this act can lead to an imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, and with fine which may extend to two thousand rupees.

2. Not reporting money lying around, if it is more than 10

According to the treasure trove act of 1878, if you find money above Rs.10 then you should report it.

Many-a-times you might have seen a 100 rupees or 500 rupees lying somewhere and simply ignored it. According to the law, if you find more than Rs.10 lying around and choose not to report it then you are actually committing a crime.

If you violate this act then you should be ready might in for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine or with both.

3. Flying a kite

According to the Indian Aircraft Act of 1934, you cannot fly kites without proper permission.

Many of us love to fly kites, but you would be quite surprised to know that it is actually illegal. Well, according to the law, you are not supposed to fly a kite without proper permission. Interestingly, you need the same permission to fly an airplane and a kite.

If you violate this act then you can be punished with a penalty or jail time or both.

4. More than 10 couples dancing on the same floor is illegal.

Licensing and controlling places of amusement 1960 does not allow more than 10 couples to dance together on the dance floor.

Yes, it is a fact. According to the law, more than 10 people are not supposed to dance together or a dance floor. So, next time you hit the dance floor, do check that there are not more than 10 couples.

5. Illegal to get your ears or teeth treated by the roadside vendors.

The Chap 5, sec 49 of the Dentist Act of 1948, makes it illegal.

Well, if you ever have any problems with your ears or teeth then always go to a certified doctor. Not just for the sake of your health but also for the sake of the law. According to the law, you are prohibited from getting your ears and teeth treated by a roadside vendor.

Anybody who violates this law shall be punishable with a fine of 500 rupees or an imprisonment of 6 months or both.

6. A Suicide attempt.

Well, if you ever want to die by suicide then better make sure that you are successful. In our country, you might be prosecuted for an attempted suicide. The government has taken some steps to decriminalize it.

Section 309 of IPC makes the act punishable with a jail term of up to one year and fine.

7.It is illegal for factories not to have spittoons.

The factories act of 1948, clearly states that factories must have spittoons.

If you run a factory then make sure your factory has spittoons. The law states that every factory must have spittoons and it is illegal for factories to operate without spittoons. The Factories Act not just talk about spittoons but the lack of proper lighting and cleanliness is also a punishable offense according to this act.

For non-observance of any provisions of the Act and rules, the employer and manager shall be guilty of an offense and punishable with imprisonment up to three months or with a fine up to Rs. 2000 or with both.

8. Oral Sex.

According to the section 377 of the IPC, having oral sex is also a criminal offense.

Well, you must have heard about the Section 377 of the IPC. The same law that criminalizes homosexuality also prohibits you from having an oral sex. Oral sex is seen as unnatural and therefore prohibited.

Violation of this law might result with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.

9. Begging

If you thought that if nothing happens in your life then you would resort to begging, then please don’t. If you are in Mumbai or Delhi, then begging is not a safe option. In these places begging is actually a criminal offense and you can be booked for begging.

According to this act, beggars found guilty by a court of law will be sentenced to a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years.

10. Getting into somebody’s place to get cricket balls

This is something we all have done one time or the other. Sometimes to look for our cricket balls or sometimes just to explore. Well, If you still like to get into somebody’s place without proper permission or authority then the owner can very well book you.
If the owner of the place feels that you are disrupting the peaceful atmosphere of his complex.

Whoever commits criminal trespass shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three months, with fine or which may extend to five hundred rupees, or with both.

11. Consumption of alcohol without a proper permit.

You might be quite surprised to know that in Mumbai if you want to consume alcohol then you need a proper permit. Supposedly, even a restaurant that serves alcohol must have a separate permit room and even the customers must have their permit.

Well, not just that, consumption of alcohol below the age of 25 is also an offense. Without a proper permit, you are not supposed to either consume, possess or carry alcohol.

There are various penalties under the Act, which even include imprisonment up to five years or a fine which can go up to Rs50,000.
