Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt Accepts Just ₹1 As Dowry, Gives Us Another Reason To Respect Him

Ace wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt has made India’s flag fly high with his impeccable performances at various international championships. An Olympic medal winner, Yogeshwar knows how to set examples on the mat by thrashing his opponents and he doesn’t shy away from setting examples outside the arena. He took a firm stand against the decision of making Salman Khan the goodwill ambassador for Rio Olympics and this time, he has taken a stand against the evil practice of dowry.

Yogeshwar Dutt has set an example for everyone by choosing to accept just ₹1 as dowry on his wedding. The wrestler said that he has taken the stand because he has seen his own family suffer in order to collect dowry for his sisters.

“I decided on two things while growing up — I will excel in wrestling and I will not accept dowry. My first dream has been realised and now it is time to keep my second promise.”

The wrestler is marrying Sheetal Sharma, daughter of Haryana’s Congress leader Jai Bhagwan Sharma on 16th January. The couple got engaged at Murthal, Haryana on Saturday.

The wrestler said he wished his father, Rammehar Dutt and his first guru, Master Satbir Singh were alive to see him keeping both of his promises.

Sushila Devi, Yogeshwar’s mother said that they are only accepting ₹1 as a ‘shagun’ (mark of good omen) from the bride’s family and nothing more.

In a nation where the dowry system has become a huge social evil and countless brides and their families suffer from the sinful practice, Yogeshwar’s little step is a very welcome move. If more people like him come forward, we may actually get rid of the dowry system and make our society a better place to live.
