A young girl of 12 went missing from her home and her family spent years looking for her until finally they gave up, thinking her to be dead. On a strange twist of fate, the girl returned home after 10 years, a young woman of 22 now, and her heart-breaking story of her ordeal in the last 10 years left her family in shock.
Sold for the first time at the age of 12, she was sold 8 more times and was raped by at least 30 men in the last decade. This is how the 22-year-old recounts her horrific story:
A woman and a man abducted me… they took me to Ambala and sold me to a man for Rs 30,000. Later, I was sold to another man for Rs 40,000… he and another man raped me. I tried to escape but they caught me… after that, I was raped by many more men.
Back in 2009, the girl was forced into marriage with a 50-year-old truck driver. When her “husband” died a couple of years later, she was thrown out of her house by her in-laws.
My life became miserable after that. His family threw me out. I had to struggle for food and shelter. When I went to the police station to complain, his relatives claimed I was mentally ill.
After years of contemplation, she mustered up the courage to come back home in Delhi after a woman she met in Siliguri inspired her to do so.
The girl’s mother is resolute to find justice for her daughter and to make things a little brighter, the police have decided to reopen the case of the missing girl that was registered 10 years ago.
