12 Times Movies Predicted The Future And It Actually Came True

Life imitates art.

No one knows what the future holds, but probably Hollywood knows.

The writers and filmmakers never got it all wrong and had constantly been taking the right guess, trying to predict technology decades ahead of time. Look at a few inventions and you will realize a few inventions not only suck but were predicted by them decades ago. It’s nearly impossible to cite all the future technologies depicted in films for over 100+ years, but a few actually predicted how the future might look like.

So, here are 12 times when Hollywood nailed it.

1. Back To The Future (1989)

From fingerprint scanning to video games that don’t require controllers, there are a number of things that this movie got right. One of them is also wearable computing.

 

2. Total Recall (1990)

In Total Recall, Arnold Schwarzenegger was shown running from the group out to kill him. He hops into the Johnny Cab and instructs the autonomous, robotic driver just to start driving. Google’s self-driving car is one of the company’s most exciting projects and there are three states where these are legal.

 

3. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Predicted: Tablets

Among many gadgets that were depicted in Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking science fiction film, one of them happens to be a tablet which many of us use today. he also predicted the time period when these devices would appear. Apple’s iPad made its debut in 2010, only nine years after the setting of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

 

4. Minority Report (2002)

Steven Spielberg consulted industrial designers and futurists to get their views on how the future might look like and yes he certainly got it right.

 

5. The Jetsons (1962)

It was Hanna-Barbera’s Space Age counterpart to The Flintstones. Several technologies in The Jetsons were ahead of their time. There was video chat, tanning beds, a TeleViewer (similar to an iPad), and of course robot vacuum.

 

6. Gattaca (1997)

Predicted: Home Genetic Testing

The corporate world hasn’t yet descended to DNA tests as portrayed in Gattaca. However, you can pick up home DNA tests to get a heads up on your genetic health risks.

 

7. Weird Science (1985)

There is a connection, though weird. In the movie, they create the ‘perfect’ women using a computer and plastic Barbie doll. Today, with a 3D printer you can create a replica of someone using a PC and some plastic.

 

8. Metropolis (1927)

Predicted: Android

No, this movie doesn’t depict Google’s open source operating system. Here, a mad scientist transforms a robot into a doppelgänger of another character in order to crush a workers revolt. There are plenty of fairly humanoid robots that exist today.

 

9. Woman in the Moon (1929)

Predicted: Space Travel

Neil Armstrong landed on the moon in 1969. But this silent film showed what it might be like 40 years earlier. Nice job, Fritz Lang.

 

10. Star Trek (1966)

Predicted: 1969 Moon landing.
