Vir Das’ Powerful FB Post About Comedians Making Political Jokes Hits The Nail On Its Head

It is a common assumption that as a comic since we like to find humour in all things, we somehow owe it to society to make jokes on political parties they are aligned against. While we do dabble in some form of political humour from time to time, that does not mean we are under any sort of obligation to follow through with it each and every time.

Vir Das, in a recent Facebook post, addresses this assumption and makes a powerful point. He impresses upon the staunch supporters of political parties in the nation that comedy, unlike governance, need not be a democratic affair.

Here’s the complete Facebook post:

Dear Congress fans. I don’t owe you BJP Jokes.
BJP fans. I don’t owe you congress jokes.
AAP Fans. I don’t owe you Congress and BJP jokes.
But all your parties owe good governance.
And right now none of them are working in parliament.
It’s simple. Comedy is not democratic. But democracy shouldn’t be this bloody comedic either.

I feel that rather than making the content of a comic’s act and whether it aligns with your own political inclination your primary concern, focus your attention on the quality of governance instead. The government in power owes good governance to its citizens but don’t expect a comic to OWE you a joke.
