Where there is hope, there is indeed a way.
Most villagers from Karnaprayag in Uttarakhand work at high altitudes between 5,000 and 7,000 feet above sea level. The accessibility between the neighbouring villages being poor, they were looking forward to the completion of the road which was proposed by Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sadak Yojna.
Inspired by Bihar’s mountain man, Dashrath Manjhi, more than 300 villagers from Karnaprayag near Uttarakhand decided to build a road themselves by cutting through the rocky mountain.
As reported by TOI, Kunwar Singh, a 56-year-old ex-serviceman was involved in the project. This is what he had to say:
“We strongly believe in strengthening the environment, and all of us had vowed not to raze any trees to build the road. Luckily, there were not many trees on the stretch.”
Maheshwari Devi, a member of the Mahila Mangal Dal, played an active role in the exercise.
“All of us were eager to see connectivity to our villages improve so that we could access better healthcare and education for our children. And we thought that building the road ourselves was a fitting response to official apathy.
Yes, what man believes, man can achieve. 🙂
