2 Artists Set Out On A Musical Journey To Meghalaya And It’s The Perfect Tribute To Khasi Music

It’s hard to find anyone who’d disagree with these words, isn’t it? You don’t hear people say ‘Music is my religion’ for nothing! The best thing about this religion is that it evolves with time. And yet, you’ll see that one thing remains quite constant—the way it binds people and brings them together. A rock concert brings together connoisseurs in the same way that folk music brought people together during festivals in the olden days. Amazing isn’t it?

In fact, traditional folk music, particularly Khasi music, is what brought two musicians—Kitkupar Shangpliang and Tipriti Kharbangar—together on an epic journey!

Their journey began as all journeys do, with a dream. Kit aspired to preserve the charm of Khasi music which, unfortunately like all other forms of traditional folk music, is slowly fading away. Tipriti dreamed of reconnecting with her love for Khasi music, and learning to seamlessly weave it into her own tunes.

The answer to their beautiful aspirations lay deep in the heartland of Khasi music.

And so it began, their journey through the abode of clouds, Meghalaya, as they rediscovered the charm of Khasi music and in the process, reconnected with their musical roots.

With the breathtaking backdrop of the mountains to inspire them, Kit and Tipriti composed a lovely song that paid tribute to the Khasi people, their culture and their way of life.

This journey took them to some spectacular locations. Can you imagine the joy of composing music by the riverside?

Or learning to actually create an indigenous folk music instrument from the locals?

When you’re on a musical journey, you’re bound to encounter fellow musicians on the way. So what do you do then? Well, you jam! Even if it’s in the thick of the woods!

There is undeniable power in the magic of music, and it’s probably what Kit and Tipriti were trying to find by rekindling the tunes of Khasi music. And now that they’ve found it, they’re one step closer to fulfilling their dream.
