When I was a kid, I always believed babies were God’s gift to a couple for getting married. I imagined that somehow during the wedding ceremonies, the mantras were responsible for “planting the seed of life” into the mother-to-be. A few years went by and sex education in school shattered my longstanding illusion. But at least I was convinced that babies came as a result of the efforts of the couple.
However, most recently, a team in Kiev, Ukraine has successfully “created” a baby with not two but THREE biological parents.Â
The team was led by Valery Zukin (picture) at the Nadiya clinic.
The baby was made by the fertilisation of a mother’s egg using the father’s sperm and transferring the result into an embryo from a female donor.
The innovative process is termed as ‘pronuclear transfer.’Â The resultant embryo was implanted into the mother’s womb and a few months later, an active, healthy baby was born.
Team leader Valery Zukin confirmed after testing that indeed, the baby was carrying the DNA of all of the three people involved in the process.
The day isn’t too far away when we can take these combinations of DNA to the next level and produce a real life Spider-man!
