Humans have come a long way since the days of the bow, arrow and spear. The weapons we are building today are more sophisticated than anything in the past. There seems to be no glass ceiling for innovations in making new weapons.
But when new weapons are not made, enthusiasts have tinkered with old weapons and retrofitted them with modern technology – making them as lethal as any modern weapon.
Check these terrifying weapons out –
1. Explosive crossbow
Crossbows like the one below have been in use for centuries. It was first a replacement for the old bow and arrow. After the invention of gunpowder, its use was diminished and was not until the modern times, that hunters started using them again.
And then a person went ahead and fitted the arrow tips with explosive material and this is the result –
2. Two-handed Great Sword
The two-handed great sword was a regular weapon in the middle ages and was known for its long length – up to 1.2 meters.
Then they went ahead and tried slicing open a human mannequin for testing its lethality.
Pretty lethal.
3. This harmless car that puts burglars on fire
The car looks as regular as it gets. But under the car lie pipes that look exactly like exhaust pipes. The kind where people modify the exhaust system to look cooler.
But this car is fitted with a literal flamethrower under the chassis.
Rest assured, no one is going to even try stealing it after the first try.
4. GBU 39, that can kill you even if you are hiding in a bunker
Conventionally know as the bunker buster, the GBU 39 looks like an ordinary missile.
But none of the ordinary missiles can do this –
There is no bunker, no underground facility safe from this monster.
5. The real world Jericho missile
Remember the scene from Iron Man where Tony Stark demonstrates the capability of the Jericho missile?
Turns out, we already have a missile that is just like the Jericho. And from the looks of it, it looks very lethal.
6. Dillon M134, that shoots 50 bullets per second.
Normal Gatling guns are seen in every Hollywood action movie ever. But the Dillon M134 is a marvel in itself.
It is made of Titanium and can shoot up to 50 bullets per second. That’s a lot of bullets for a 3-minute flyby.
7. Exacto bullet/laser guided homing – the bullet you cannot dodge
Who says you cannot curve a bullet like in the movies. Turns out you can do exactly that. Lockheed Martin researched bullets that can be guided on to a moving target, and the Exacto bullet was born.
There is literally no dodging this bullet.
8. The RIP bullet – literally Rest In Pieces
If the creepy stalker bullet was not enough they came up with the RIP bullet. RIP stands for Radically Invasive Projectile. It is designed to purely kill.
It is designed to damage all the vital organs in your torso as the bullet goes in.
Hence, RIP can also mean Rest In Pieces in this case.
9. Air burst explosive rounds – XM25 – just like in the movies.
Remember this scene from Elysium? Matt Damon fires bullets that burst before they hit the target and rip the target into pieces.
The technology is not fictional – a real gun does that. It fires grenades that can be exploded at any point on the projectile you wish.
10. A bottle of motor oil and petrol – a lethal cocktail
A simple bottle of alcohol is filled with petrol and motor oil. Why motor oil you ask? Because motor oil makes the flaming petrol stick to the surface you throw this devil on.
And if the cocktail is mixed properly, it is notorious for being inextinguishable, because the motor oil keeps burning even after the flames go out.
11. A harmless laptop battery – FMG-9
A harmless laptop battery may look like this –
Open it up and it becomes a submachine gun with a laser scope on top. It can be hidden anywhere you want, and the USA is trying to manufacture a variant that looks EXACTLY like a laptop battery that can be fitted inside a laptop.
Neat.
12. Claymore mines
If you have played any video game featuring US soldiers you must have come across this explosive. The note in front of this mine – “FRONT TOWARD ENEMY” is there for a reason.
Because the inside looks like this –
Hundreds of small steel pellets are embedded in high power explosive. That means when it explodes and if you are on the wrong side of it, you will be peppered beyond help. It is one of the most destructive and proven mines out there with a track record of over 60 years!
One may ask, how many of these weapons do we need?
Like they say – Weapons are like money, no one knows the meaning of enough.
