The Way This Mom Handled Her Teenage Daughter’s Pregnancy Is A Lesson For All The Parents

We know that our parents only want the best for us. But coming from any kind of Indian family, conservative or non-conservative, we know that teenage pregnancy is something that will not be taken positively, in any way whatsoever. The anger and disappointment from the family’s side make sense also because it shows a lot of irresponsible behaviour on the teenager’s part, and also risks the academic and career prospects of the person involved.

But, is that the only way that situation can be dealt with?

We came across a Quora answer which showed us how a teenage pregnancy can turn out to be so different for both the mother and the child if it’s handled differently by the parents.
Elizabeth Belden Handler‘s answer is not only insightful for the parents, but for the teenagers as well.

So here it goes:

What if your daughter tells you that she is pregnant?

Well, this happened when my daughter was 18. Actually, I told her that she was. She was in deep denial. After she decided to continue the pregnancy, I helped her get in touch with my midwife. At first, she wasn’t sure she was going to keep the baby and we looked into open adoption. Around the seventh month, she decided that she was going to keep the baby. We talked about how she would be the mom. I was not going to take over for her. She gave birth to her daughter squatting, with me holding her up, her sisters encouraging her, her dad pacing the hall outside her bedroom. She is a great mom. When her daughter was 1 1/2 she went to college and got her AA. She’s gone on to marry and have three boys. Her daughter graduated from college with honors and lives with her husband in Italy.

Having a daughter get pregnant unexpectedly isn’t the end of the world. Love helps everything.
