It was recently discovered that Amazon was selling doormats with the Indian flag printed on them. The discovery caused an outrage across social media with numerous folks asking the online retailer to take down the listing. However, the initial response from the retailer was that the listing was not on the Indian portal but in Canada.
Sushma Swaraj was furious after the discovery and issued a warning to Amazon via her Twitter handle for the removal of all such listings from their catalogue.
Indian High Commission in Canada : This is unacceptable. Please take this up with Amazon at the highest level. https://t.co/L4yI3gLk3h

Amazon must tender unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately. /1

If this is not done forthwith, we will not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official. We will also rescind the Visas issued earlier.

This morning, a spokesperson from Amazon issued a statement that the doormats were removed from the website.
“The item is no longer available for sale on the site.”
Amazon has invested over ₹34,000 crore in order to strengthen their foothold in the Indian market. The refusal of visas to Amazon officials would prove significantly detrimental to their business. So naturally, the online retailer had to comply.
Furthermore, all those who feel Ms Swaraj’s warning was an overreaction and cite the union jack being used in such a manner, please understand this.
Our tricolour is not something to be stepped on or used for dusting off your feet.
