Ever since the beginning of time, a girl is told how to behave, how to dress, how to sit, what to do what not do. Every girl’s life comes with a fixed set of rules that she has to follow or there are repercussions.
It’s the 21st century and some people are still centuries back and think that a women is supposed to live life ‘their’ way.
It breaks my heart when any woman gets hurt because of such backward code-of-conduct; it shatters me to tell you that a high school student was targeted just a few days back.
Summer, who goes to Hickory Ridge High School in North Carolina wore this simple green top to school one day. She is an excellent honour student with 4.4 GPA.
It’s when she was sitting in the cafeteria, having a quiet meal; the Principal of the school came and asked her to cover herself. Principal was later accompanied by a guard with a gun when she asked her to change her top completely. Describing the scene Summer says –
“The security guard was within five feet of me. He had his hand on his gun. The principal said, ‘I’m gonna give you an ultimatum. We have tried to call your mother. You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you.’”
And what was her crime you ask? It was because her SHOULDERS WERE SHOWING! Yes, I am not even kidding. Summer is SUSPENDED from the school for 15 days and she won’t be able to attend her own graduation!
Twitter user @curlyaliyah shared the news and Twitter couldn’t really take this. Just because a girl’s shoulders were visible (because she has those), she gets to live through this terrible nightmare. How is this fair?
People are supporting Summer and have been criticising the school for its backward policies.Twitter has been sending e-mails to Principal of the school, to let her know that they stand by Summer.

And there were also tweets that just made a lot of sense and must be heard.
1. This is it!
@curlyaliyah maybe teach males not to sexualize every aspect of the female body instead of creating over the top dress codes

2. As simple as that.
3. Couldn’t have said it better.
@mpachara_ @curlyaliyah I know. It makes me want to cry tears of rage, and also throw up.

You can watch Summer’s entire interview with WCNC here.
Summer is a bright kid and this affects her life. She complied with the rules and she works hard, she doesn’t deserve this at all.
Hope Summer gets justice.
