I know it’s 2018 but along with a lot of aspirations from last year, unfortunately, we have also inherited the biggest problem that plagued the entire world with its toxicity- sexism. The same sexism that led to misogyny and harassment at work and places where women have to fight daily to be treated as an equal.
On the hindsight, the movement #MeeToo was born and as haunting as it was at least women from all walks of life stood tall and shamed their abuser like they couldn’t earlier. Yes, it did catch up after actresses named powerful men in positions but, it’d be a folly to assume that disparity exists only in showbiz!
Even Technology for that matter is riddled with systems that think women are biologically inferior to men and hence can not excel at tech jobs (remember the anti-diversity memo by a Google employee that got him fired?)
But hey, complaining will not get us anywhere. Strong-willed work will and fortunately, it has already begun. Entrepreneurs and philanthropists of the world have joined forces to drive the point home.
In fact, Melinda Gates, Co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, recently held the fort high when she wrote an Op-ed for TIME and stated reinstated that ‘It’s Time for a New Era for Women.’ She wrote,
Melinda Gates on why we should invest in women in 2018: "Simply put, women get things done"https://t.co/ke9PqH1psi pic.twitter.com/cPM0eq9tnB

“Simply put, women get things done.”
The article which was guest edited by Bill Gates was another block in the growing tower of women empowerment. But I guess, the cause is lost on a few people.
Apparently, the words imply that women are mere ‘managers’ and not ‘thinkers’. At least, that’s what a Journalist thought.
Assuming we need managers, not thinkers https://t.co/nEeKN7K7bF

But just when we thought that the cruel takeaway will add to the already existing discourse of sexism, Sona Mohapatra happened!
If you’ve been living under a rock, Sona is not only a phenomenal singer but a strong voice that patriarchy likes to stay miles away from. A woman of opinion, she never shies away from making herself heard. And she does it without a care in the world.
And she did exactly that in a way that command applauds. Replying to the misogynistic tweet, she tweeted…
you are assuming –
1) 'getting things done' doesn't take 'thinking'.
2) that you are being 'funny', 'witty' or even 'insightful' in any way
3) that by adding to the already burdened sexist discourse & reality of the workspace, you are doing us all a favour. https://t.co/Kdolbv4PDe— Sona Mohapatra (@sonamohapatra) January 5, 2018
Baaam!
Now, while there is a lot one could sum up from the encounter, I’d like to take refuge under comic, Aditi’s words.
This guy purposely does this- says misogynistic uncle level things as if he’s some sassy bad boy. It’s so weird *shudder*

Hear that ladies? Let no one assume anything you are and you can be. Now, go win the world!
