With the beginning of 2017, France introduced a groundbreaking law in the field of public healthcare by making every citizen of the nation an automatic organ donor, unless they choose to opt-out. This ensured that no patient will have to wait months (or even years) to get a transplant to get a new lease at life.
However, when it comes to India, organ donation is nothing short of a taboo. Due to lack of proper knowledge and countless misconceptions on the procedure, families of the deceased generally do not want to donate their organs. Due to this, there is a huge gap in the demand and supply of organs and many people lose their lose their lives waiting to get a transplant.
In such a time, this story of a young man is nothing short of an inspiration for all of us.
Roshan Kumar, a 22-year-old Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) recruit saved half a dozen lives even after bidding farewell to the world. Kumar’s vital organs were used as transplants for six patients after he died in a road accident in Delhi.
Native to Uttarakhand, Kumar was visiting his relatives in Delhi’s Dwarka area when he was hit by a speeding bike and received serious brain injuries.
Roshan lost his parents at a tender age of 1 and was brought up by his uncle. He wanted to serve his nation by joining the army since his childhood. Sadly, days after he got selected for the ITBP, he lost his life. His uncle said,
“Roshan is not at the border to protect the country. But I am proud to say that he served the nation by saving six lives.”
Dr AK Rai, medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital told how Roshan got referred to them and when his chance of survival reduced, the family decided to donate his organs.
Roshan’s eyes, heart, liver, kidneys and intestine were procured and gave a new life to six other patients. Parvez Alam, the 47-year-old patient who received Roshan’s kidney, thanked him in an emotional statement.
Roshan’s family was also felicitated on Tuesday by the Safdarjung Hospital for the gesture. Let’s hope this story serves as an inspiration to the people of the country and more people opt for organ donation after their demise.
