As soon as the news of Manushi Chhillar being crowned as the Miss World 2017 surfaced, praises and adulations poured from all the corners. While a lot of people were jubilant that India brought the coveted crown home after 17 years, many people took to social media to express their pride including Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
But I’d be lying If I said that it was all there was! No, I’m not talking about Shashi Tharoor’s ‘tongue-in-the-cheek-moment’ where he cracked the now infamous ‘Chhillar’ pun. Instead, I’m talking about a sect that has come out in the open and asked the imperative question- ‘Why are there still BEAUTY pageants?’ Sample this:Â
It's 2017 WHY ARE THERE STILL BEAUTY PAGEANTS ARRRGHHH oh wait no, they have a qna round sorry my bad it's all about smarts what was I thinking

And TBH, the sentiment has struck a chord with many like-minded people who have voiced their bafflement at the same.
And, not to belittle anyone’s hard work, efforts and intentions, but these sentiments are extremely integral, considering the day and age we live in.
In fact, amongst all, Sofia ‘Gaia Mother’ Hayat who is known to voice her opinion irrespective of the consequences, has lashed out at the beauty pageant in a series of Instagram posts.Â
Taking a stand against the euro-centric ideas of beauty, Sofia has taken to Instagram to object the accepted ideals and has asked for breathing space. See her posts here…
1. ‘Miss World is outdated.’
2. She even called out for applause for ‘real’ Miss World who come in all sizes and shapes.
Miss or Mrs Worlds! They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes! We as women are not here to be judged by anyone!
3. ‘Boycott anything that puts an ideal on you.’
Boycott anything that puts an “ideal” on you and the children of this Earth. You are not here to be judged. You are more than physical beings..and yet all of your physical is incredible. They try to put you in boxes..dictating that you must fit in one..but I say..create your own life..create your own ideals..beauty is not about what others say..it is what you want it to be. You are beautiful..and if only you were taught that, instead of being given a template of what it should be..you would all be happy with what and who you are right now!!! There is no template for beauty..because YOU ARE ALREADY BEAUTIFUL!
Man..woman..transgender..big..small..tall..short…all of you are my Miss or Mrs World!
Namaste Shalom Salaam.

Now, I don’t know about you…Sofia’s words come at a point where we are still obsessed with the ‘ideal’ ideas of beauty that MNCs sell after feeding on the insecurities of innumerable women who are still taunted about their colour. Is it not time enough to change that?
