Smriti Irani Finds Camera Inside A Changing Room In Goa. Here’s How You Can Stay Alert.

Union Education Minister Smriti Irani had gone shopping at a Fabindia store in Candolim, Goa, when she spotted a hidden camera in the trial room. She called Micheal Lobo, a local legislator who is also from BJP, who immediately lodged an FIR.

The camera was positioned in a way that the lens pointed right into the changing room and was not easily visible. Footage from the camera, installed four months ago according to staff at the store, was being recorded in a computer in the manager’s office. Mr Lobo confirmed that the computer held a lot of footage from the trial room.

The police have registered a case of outraging a woman’s modesty against the store and are investigating the matter. Such shocking incidents are becoming common over time.

Here are a few ways to protect your modesty from such perpetrators in changing rooms of shopping stores:

1. Try to make calls inside the changing room

If there is a hidden camera, your phone will make clicking and buzzing noises near a product that emits an electromagnetic field. Not all phones will do this, but if you’ve noticed that your phone tweedles or buzzes near speakers, or when a call is about to come in.

2. Two- way mirror test

A two-way mirror is one in which one side acts as a mirror, and the second as a “window”. When the part of the room with the “window” is dark, and the other room is bright, a person can see through the “window” into the other room.

Place the tip of your fingernail on the mirror, and if you can see a gap between the reflection and your fingernail, then its an ordinary mirror. If the reflection is very close to the finger nail, then its a two-way mirror.

3. Search for pin-hole cameras

Before you change your clothes, look into places that you think might have a hidden camera in them- for example, holes in the wall or on the ceiling or ventilator.

If you see anything resembling a lens or come across any of these, immediately notify the authorities. A simple action can protect the privacy of a lot of people.

Stay alert. Stay safe.
