Movie promotions these days have become a mammoth source of entertainment for the masses. It’s a treat for fans to watch their favourite celebs grace the sets of other TV shows, indulge in some fun banter with each other or the audience, and loosen up a bit. But this ‘casual’ appearances can sometimes turn into a slight detriment, especially if the celebs get a bit too free with their words or actions, as actor Sidharth Malhotra recently found out.
To promote his latest movie, Aiyaari, Sidharth Malhotra had accompanied co-star Manoj Bajpayee to the sets of Bigg Boss.
Manoj Bajpayee was trying to get Sidharth to shoot a few dialogues in Bhojpuri, when the latter made a comment about the language which did not go down well with many, including actress Neetu Chandra, who decided to take to Twitter to express her disappointment.
In her tweet, she called out Sidharth for disrespecting Bhojpuri language by allegedly comparing speaking the language to getting a ‘latrine feeling’, his very words on the show.
So disappointed @S1dharthM some1who is so fortunate 2 work wd d best. Who despite being an outsider has made a name 4 himself,4 U 2 use ur words so loosely.2 disrespect #Bhojpuri on national TV. SHOCKED! How on earth does speaking in #Bhojpuri gives u a latrine feeling.Shame on U pic.twitter.com/dQqarHZRqM

Sidharth Malhotra responded to the tweet the very same day. He apologised for hurting sentiments and assured that he meant no disrespect. However, he did not address it to Chandra directly, nor mention her in his tweet.
I recently tried speaking a new language while I was on a TV show. In the process if I inadvertently hurt anyone's feelings or sentiments, I apologise and assure you that no disrespect was meant in any way.

Even co-star Manoj Bajpayee, who speaks the language himself, has seconded Sidharth’s explanation and reiterated that it was all meant as harmless fun.
It was all fun and there was no intention of making a mockery.i vouch for it as I was there and I understand and speak the language as good as or better than many.बुझाइल?नीक रही।खुस रही । https://t.co/Sgi4zEctnU

In the light of Chandra’s comment and Sidharth’s apology, Twitter seems to be divided into two camps.
One half agrees with Neetu Chandra’s observation and commends the bold step she has taken to speak up about the insult to a language.
1. In agreement.
Shocking and agree with @Neetu_Chandra .. https://t.co/zUSzL1cGzL

2. Is Manoj Bajpayee equally guilty of laughing on Sid’s inconsiderate joke?
I am sure @S1dharthM has realised how disgusting his "so-called" joke on bhojpuri is. But do you, @BajpayeeManoj , offering your hearty laughter to this, approve of these views. Utterly disappointed. https://t.co/q2NXULE5Qn

3. You’re better than this, Sid.

4. Shall we give him the benefit of doubt?
Neetu I completely second you. I felt the same when he said that. And I thought it was highly amateurish on his part. Although he is a sensible kid. We should give him a benefit of doubt.

5. Ominous warning, this!
@ManojTiwariMP @BajpayeeManoj kindly see this matter otherwise it would invite another padmavati row https://t.co/yoD68jW9Jb

The other half believes that Sidharth Malhotra was misunderstood and his comment did not pertain to the language per se, but to the way he was speaking it. There were also those who appreciated his apology and felt there was no need for it.
1. That’s not how it’s done, Neetu.
This is no way to point out a mistake. Plus, it's the point of how you interpret it. He didn't insult the language rather he described the way he couldn't speak it because of the heavy accent. Even if he is wrong, getting fake RTs through paid accounts is not the way. Shame! pic.twitter.com/7bJsu820fY

2. It’s all about the context.
I swear that was not at all offending Sid. I'm a Bihari and very much accustomed with the Bhojpuri language. I know in what context you meant what and most of the people understand that you meant nothing wrong. Lots of love. https://t.co/ihwp8wrNZF
— aashi 🦋 (@qweeenbeeee) January 22, 2018
If it was offensive, people would've reacted then and there or on the days which followed thereafter. It being highlighted now by that person is too illogical. You did nothing wrong. Trust me. https://t.co/ihwp8wrNZF

3. Sidharth’s apology may have been his saving grace!
Now this is the way! Thou this was not required but still thank you for this sid. And the best part you didn't point out whoever did this. I hope the person gets this that no matter he/she tries bringing you down you are different n respect everyone n every culture! #Respect ✌️ https://t.co/wbAssEl2qZ

4. He’s done nothing wrong.
He shouldn't apologize for that. I saw the video and there was nothing wrong in it. He is being too nice. https://t.co/uTB5vXD4KM

5. We Stan!
We do Stan the correct man! We are proud of you @S1dharthM ✌️ https://t.co/1AlKYVfKc0

There are a couple of things that must be factored in when looking at a situation like this. First, the fact that this happened on national tv could have various implications, especially since the channel could’ve edited the bit out but instead, decided to show it.
Second, the context is of utmost importance here. We all fall prey to the foot-in-mouth disease and celebs are no exemption to this. While they should indeed be careful of what they speak on public platforms, there is no denying that their context can often be misconstrued and a benefit of doubt must be accorded in such cases.
And finally, the actor has apologised sincerely as it seems and clarified the context as well.
Whether he was at fault or not is a clear case of ‘to each his own’.
