Out of the many movies that 2016 came with, Aamir Khan starer, ‘Dangal’ was my favourite. And if box office collections (read: fastest 100 crores ever) are anything to go by, the biopic on the lives of the Phogat family- Mahavir, Geeta, Babita, won hearts even out of theatres!
But apart from being thankful, to the entire ‘Dangal’ team for a film that will forever grace the shelves of my film collection, I shall forever be indebted to Aamir Khan for introducing us to the Geeta and Babita and bringing them to the limelight, they so deserved! While their achievements had done enough to command respect, another story about their humility has my heart now!Â
Sanya Malhotra who essayed the role of Babita Phogat was recently at an event where she opened up about an incident from Geeta’s marriage to Pawan Kumar and it will win your heart too.Â
“I remember there were so many people from around the villages to see Aamir sir. The whole security and the policemen were only busy with Aamir sir. And me, Nitish sir and Sakshi ma’am were left behind. There were people coming to us asking for photographs. And these girls who have won medals for our country–Vinesh Phogat, Geeta, Babita–they all were surrounding the three of us and protecting us.”
She said so at the India Today Woman Summit 2017.
Sanya also went on to add how much in awe she was when the real-life heroes were by their side, protecting them.Â
“It was a crazy feeling. And these girls with powerful muscles and beautiful attires were looking absolutely fierce.”
This just goes ahead and proves one thing, you don’t have to be a man to be a hero, you can be a woman, a heroine and still be enough. And I don’t know about you but my respect for the Phogat sisters just increased by folds!
