8 Times Reema Lagoo As Mom Was An Incarnation Of Our Moms On-Screen

If there was one face who was loved equally in every Indian household, it was one and only Reema Lagoo. She worked in countless Hindi and Marathi films.

She made a place in our hearts with her amicable portrayal of Maa. She is a legacy, a gem we lost too soon. When laughed, smiled or cried on the screen; there was hardly a face in the room who would not feel the same emotion.

At the age of 59, Reema Lagoo passed away. The entire industry and fans mourned the death of Bollywood’s favorite Maa.

In the loving memory of Late Reema ji, here are 8 of her iconic portrayals of Maa that we and the industry will never forget.

1. Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! – 1994

Playing the mother of two daughters Pooja (Renuka) and Nisha (Madhuri), Reema Lagoo in this film was as shy, emotional and loving as our moms are. When she bids farewell to her married daughter, Pooja and when she lost her forever to the Gods above- her emotions were so real that it has never failed to make us cry.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! is a wonderful family entertainer and Reema Lagoo is certainly the life of this film.

2. Rangeela – 1995

Milli (Urmila Matondkar) dreams of becoming a movie star. Unlike a lot of parents who consider the entertainment industry as ludicrous job line; Reema Lagoo played the mother of the 21st century.

Mrs. Joshi, played by Reema Ji was not only protective of her daughter, but very supportive of her dreams. She wanted her to touch the sky.

3. Yes Boss – 1997

Reema plays a single, ailing mother who’s only dream is to see her son succeed in life. She is innocent and so beautiful at heart that even though her son deceits her with a false marriage, all she does is, stand by him.

4. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai – 1998

Reema’s screen time in this movie is not much, but that’s the beauty about her screen presence. Mother of the bride-to-be, Anjali (Kajol), Reema’s character like every mother, is worried about her daughter’s well-being. She knew deep down that Anjali was’t genuinely happy with Aman (Salman Khan), while the engagement was in procession.

P.S. – When this line comes “ro ke tu rabko rula ke savere chali jayegi, tu bada yaad aayegi”, in the song ‘Saajan Ji Ghar Aaaye’; it always brings me to tears.

5. Vaastav – 1999

When the time demands, the creator has to play the role of the destroyer. So when Raghu (Sanjay Dutt) is knee deep into the mess he made; his mother (Reema) shoots him and puts him out of his misery. It is Reema Lagoo’s most iconic performance.

6. Hum Saath Saath Hain – 1999

Mother of 3 sons and a daughter, Reema is an incredible mom and their family is an epitome of perfection for an Indian family. Reema is considerate, caring and loves all her kids equally.

That film is too good to be true, but Reema Lagoo’s portrayal of Maa is exactly how our mother’s are, don’t you think?

7. Jis Desh Me Ganga Rehta Hai – 2000

A mother who wasn’t blessed with her own son, raises Ganga (Govinda) as her own. When the time comes, she gives him up with a very heavy heart. Reema Lagoo plays a villager from a very humble background and from whatever little she had, she fed and nurtured Ganga to be wise, noble and a wonderful young man.

Doesn’t sacrifice run through all our mothers blood?

8. Kal Ho Naa Ho – 2003

Playing Aman’s (Shah Rukh Khan) mother, Reema is not only graceful, she is calm, composed and impeccably gorgeous in this role. Helpless to see her dying son, fight with life; her inner struggle comes out beautifully in every scene.

This tops the list for me.

We will always have Reema Ji’s wonderful films and her work to remember, but we are going to miss seeing her more.

Bollywood has not just lost one of it’s finest actor but the warmest person. And for us, we have lost someone who was a refection of all our moms put together. Reema Ji, you are being dearly missed.

Life is very unfair that we lost you so early. We hope you are smiling and happy, wherever you are.
