This 22-Year-Old Real Life Sleeping Beauty Has Been Asleep For The Past Five Years

We all know the tale of Sleeping Beauty, right? We all grew up hearing her story. But what if something like that happens to you in real life? Scared? So was Beth Goodier and her mother.

It was right before her 17th birthday, exhausted Beth (then, 16) slept one day on the couch and didn’t wake up properly for the next six months. She used to sleep as long as 22 hours a day and was up for only 2 hours. That too, in a dream-like trance.

Beth’s mother Janine calculated that her daughter has slept through 75 percent of the time over the last five years.

She was diagnosed with Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS) or popularly called Sleeping Beauty Syndrome. But what triggers this horrifying sleep disorder is still not known.

Even right now, Beth (22) is in a two-and-a-half months old episode of KLS. She is home most of the times, sleeping.

She’s too tired to walk and has to be pushed whenever she’s out to visit the doctor.

Though her tale is un-fairy like, she did meet her Prince Charming. Staying by her side constantly is her 25-year-old boyfriend, Dan. They met three years ago, during Beth’s awake phase.

Her medical condition is so rare that it baffled the doctors. They first thought she had brain tumour or haemorrhage. But, later after a doctor recalled a similar case, then they realised it was KLS.

What’s shocking is that there are more than 100 people in UK who suffer from KLS. Mostly, teenagers who are affected the most in their formative years.
