Arundhati Bhattacharya May Become India’s 1st Woman Governor Of RBI And Her Profile Is Epic

With Raghuram Rajan’s term in the governance of the Reserve Bank of India ending in September, speculations are intense regarding who would be stepping into his shoes. Apart from a few names that have come up for the post such as Deputy RBI governors Urijit Patel, Rakeh Mohan and Subir Gokarn, Chief Economic Advisor, Arvind Subramanium and Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das, a strong contender is SBI Chief, Arundhati Bhattacharya.

If Arundhati Bhattacharya is elected for the position, she would be the very first woman to head the central bank of India.

Bhattacharya is one of the promising contenders for the post with her huge experience banking since 1977, starting with SBI where she has served as the Chief General Manager as well as the Deputy Managing Director.

 

In 2013, Bhattacharya was the first woman in SBI’s history of two hundred years to lead the institution and also the first Indian woman to head a Fortune 500 company!

Forbes Magazine ranked her 25th in their list of world’s 100 most powerful women in 2016 and her body of work totally justifies the honour. During Bhattacharya’s term as the Chief General Manager, SBI saw the establishment of Macquarie Infrastructure Fund, SBI-SG Global Securities Private Ltd., SBI General Insurance Ltd. as well as the introduction of mobile banking.

Therefore, it’s safe to say that Arundhati Bhattacharya is the perfect candidate for the baton to be passed to from Raghuram Rajan.
