This Heart Shattering Poem On How Society Treats Rape Victims Will Hit You In The Gut

When a woman is raped or sexually abused, she is treated like a fragile paper doll, crumpled up, a used up mess. She is consoled by concerned citizens but never treated like a human being but rather a wounded animal. Yes, she has been wounded. However, she isn’t the one who’s broken. She’s a survivor. Someone who wakes up each day with the dreaded memory and still continues to function, taking each day as it comes. She’s not broken, she’s the strongest of us all.

In this video, uploaded by Button Poetry, Sierra DeMulder recites a painfully beautiful poem, ‘Paper Dolls’, about society’s treatment of a victim of rape. She urges the victim to realise nothing’s been stolen from her. She’s not the damaged one. She’s not the one to take the blame. The only one who’s broken is the rapist himself.

So fuck society. You’re alive and your glorious heart beats with the same resounding intensity as ever. You’ve lost nothing. The only one who has lost is the rapist his sanity.
