Ranveer Singh Contradicted Himself When Asked About Feminism And It’s Quite Disappointing

Ranveer Singh is famous for his crazy antics and high on energy shenanigans which he pulls off with unbelievable ease. He has risen up to the status of a star with his remarkable acting skills which lead us to believe that although nepotism prevails in Bollywood, there is no stopping true talent.

However, Ranveer Singh, as least expected as it was, put his foot in his mouth by making a statement which completely contradicted the message he was trying to get across, when he equated ‘feminism’ with ‘meninism’.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Ranveer Singh was asked about his stance on feminism and his reply can be instrumental in landing him up in some real trouble with people who are well-informed in the concept of feminism. He said,

“I believe in gender equality, so I feel like it’s lopsided being on either side of the coin, you know? By being a ‘meninist’ or a ‘feminist’, you’re essentially already submitting and subscribing to the fact that there is an imbalance. Why won’t we just accept the equal status goal and move on?”

This is not the first time a star has shied away from proclaiming themselves a feminist because it is “too strong a word”. Feminism, in its pure essence equates gender equality and although, Ranveer Singh was propagating the same, he chose to not identify himself with the word.

If you are still nodding your head with Ranveer’s statement or can’t seem to pin-point what he said wrong, these statements might help put things in perspective.

1. Feminism=Gender equality

2. Think about it.

3. Exactly!

4. A simpler example…

Needless to say, the user who chose to condemn Ranveer Singh for his contradictory statement garnered a lot of hate for his stance, with fans defending Ranveer’s statement and refusing to accept that their star can fall a victim to misinformation.

Here’s why many people confuse feminism and ask questions like, “Why feminism? Why not simply a believer of human rights or something like that?”

The answer is not so tough to understand if read with an open mind. Feminism is about women’s liberation from patriarchy. Period. To quote Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie why it would be dishonest to call it by any other name, “It would be a way of pretending that it was not women who have, for centuries, been excluded. It would be a way of denying that the problem of gender targets women. That the problem was not about being human, but specifically about being a female human. For centuries, the world divided human beings into two groups and then proceeded to exclude and oppress one group. It is only fair that the solution to the problem should acknowledge that.”

Ranveer, we like you but this time you got it all wrong.
