One of the greatest people we have ever come across or learnt about, Albert Einstein, once said: “Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it”. And yet, we stress the importance of schooling, while often ignoring values required to sustain knowledge. But not this Mumbai lad.
Ram Subramanian shared an inspiring story of a young boy from Mumbai who was born and brought up, selling books on the streets of the city, and now he studies in Houston, Texas. He earned his living here by selling books at the Haji Ali signal.
This is Salman Syyed. He was born and lived on the footpaths of Mumbai. Sold books at Haji Ali signal. I met him and was so moved by his depth and knowledge, made a film on him and gifted him a Kindle. Today Salman is studying in Houston, Texas. Am choking up as I type this! ✊🏾 pic.twitter.com/uFf16Blkct

Ram stayed in touch with Salman after his first encounter and the latter keeps him posted with photos about everything in his life in Texas.
Just to add… salman and I are in touch over whatsapp. I had asked him to keep me posted about what he is up to so he sends me pictures of his life. From floods to Halloween parties to peace celebrations on campus. He is a star. Truly inspiring story.

Salman was ecstatic about his admission to the university and he instantly told Ram about it.

Once in Texas, Salman started getting involved in volunteer work for the Red Cross Society.

He carried his Mumbaikar spirit with him and helped people during the floods there.
During the floods. No different from mumbai floods I guess. pic.twitter.com/beMjGYyyEv

He got an opportunity to meet his favourite WWE star. He couldn’t help but share the picture with the man who made it possible.

Lastly, his recent dapper look sporting a well-groomed beard and hat is what made us so proud. It’s almost as if he is an entirely different person.
🙂 oh yeah… this is how spiffy he looks right now. (Recent pic). The hero of kids who are still selling books at Haji Ali signal today. Next time you see a kid selling books, remember salman was the same just few years ago. All he did was read the books he sold to people. ✊🏾 pic.twitter.com/fudpYchKNW

The story and Salman’s transformation itself is so unusually moving and positive. Many people are congratulating him for achieving such a great feat and striving hard to make his dreams come true.
1. A kind soul also offered to help Salman
Very inspiring. My son heads a major company in Houston. If Salman needs any help there, do DM. @KiranManral

3. We have a motivational speaker in the making!

6. Not sure about dramatically, but drastically definitely.
This is amazing. So many underprivileged kids with potential who can be assisted to break the shackles of poverty. Middle class/ upper class people spend so much on fashion entertainment vacations etc. If every family adopts one such kid I think India would change dramatically!

7. We all needed some faith restoration, this thread did it.
Thank You ! You prove me that a kind gesture can forever change the life of someone. Thank you again for making me believe in humanity. Heroes like you are among us. May God bless you !!!

The thread was also noticed by many of the influential people in the media industry. They did not fail to recognise the kind gesture by Ram Subramanian or the success of the now Houston boy, Salman.
1. Sachin Kalbag, a veteran journalist, found his hope for humanity in the thread.
This is a day of great, truly phenomenal Twitter threads that should rekindle our faith in people; something that, at least I, seem to have lost in the viciousness that social media has become. (this link via @anaggh) https://t.co/2114p4QQns

2. Vishal Dadlani expressed his pride in having known Ram and also offered his help.
This is the best thing on the internet, in a long, long time! So proud to know you, @VORdotcom ! If you come across any such endeavour that I can be any help with, just say the word! https://t.co/EaOjWzNrRD

3. There is good, indeed.

Ram Subramanian has made us believe in the goodness that still exists in our kind, and we cannot be happier about it. Salman Syyed has been a true inspiration to many of us, restoring our faith in humanity as well as the importance of seeking knowledge.
