Rajkummar Rao Is All About Breaking Stereotypes As He Plays A Transgender In A Bengali Film

Rajkummar Rao.

As most of us know him as Vijay from Queen, he has been a silent yet prominent powerhouse performer Bollywood almost doesn’t deserve. With movies like Shahid, Citylights and Aligarh under his belt, the actor is out to challenge himself and everyone else instead of running the race to become a superstar.

Rajkummar Rao starred in a Bengali film called Ami Sairabanu which is the story of a transgender woman who is rechristened as Saira Bano.

“It’s a story about a boy who is a girl from inside and is drawn towards the transgender community who rechristen him Saira Bano. It was a fascinating story and character and challenged me as an actor.”

Raj shaved off his entire body and lost a lot of weight for this particular role.

As a part of his research, he spent time with transgenders in Kolkata and tried to understand how their lives are.

“Some of the stories were really sad but they themselves are chilled out and happy people.”

Unfortunately, the film being directed by Rahul Mukerjee is currently stuck due to financial reasons. Raj hopes it will be revived soon and wishes someone would make a film on a subject like this with him in Hindi.

More power to you Raj. 🙂
