PC Calls Sikkim An ‘Insurgent’ State And Angry Netizens Ask Her To Get Her Facts Right

Priyanka Chopra is making waves out there in the West with her career moves and back at home base too. But, right now, she’s in news for reasons with a shade of murky and her tongue has landed her in those controversial waters.

Turning heads at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Priyanka’s production venture, Pahuna – The Little Visitors, premiered there and amassed a standing ovation.

But in one of her interviews, PC had a foot-in-the-mouth moment and people are pretty angry with her. Speaking with ET Canada, the Quantico star said,

“Sikkim is a small state in the North-east of India which never had a film industry or anyone who made a film from the region. This is the first film ever that’s come out of that region, because it’s very troubled with insurgency and troubling situations.”

Priyanka who is the brand ambassador of Assam, says the film is about the crisis in the state and how two kids feel about the whole situation.

“This is a film about two kids and their perspective on the refugee crisis on being moved from one place to another without understanding the reason.”

Here’s the snippet of the interview.

But, the statement didn’t go down well with the netizens. They slammed PC’s statement and said they know Sikkim as a peaceful state.

1. Some condemned it.

2. Some asked PC to think before speaking.

3. They defended the state and got into arguments with fellow netizens.

4. And continued to do so.

5. Priyanka’s fans defended her statements, but Tweeple hit back.

6. PC fan pointed how people remember the bad and forgot all the good she did.

7. Some demanded an apology.

8. People were hinting at lack of knowledge on reality.

Even filmmaker, Shoojit Sircar shared the post on his Facebook account.

Priyanka or her spokesperson haven’t issued any statements yet.

As far as Sikkim’s insurgency goes, we think PC had it confused with the insurgency in North-East. There were news journals that stated that Sikkim is actually the only state in the North-East that isn’t insurgent. Sikkim has been a part of India since 1975 and before that was a kingdom ruled by the Chogyals.
