Complaint Filed Against Priya Varrier’s Viral Song For Hurting Muslims’ Sentiments

Last I checked, 18-year-old Priya Prakash Varrier gained about 2.8 million followers, literally overnight, on Instagram and her account is now a verified one. A clip of her winking at a boy against a melodious song is winning over the hearts of all the ‘sakht laundas’ out there.

And why not, the clip is really sweet, naive and nostalgic. It takes you back to the naughtiness you might have once experienced in school. If that wasn’t enough, the second clip of this cuteness is sure to make your hearts melt.

To top it all, the background score, Manikya Malaraya Poovi, is catchy and addictive. Even if you do not know the language or understand it, the tune is stuck in your head and you’ll find yourself listening to it on loop.

However, according to News18, a complaint has been filed at the Falaknuma Police station in Hyderabad. The complainant has nothing to hold against the actors who shot to fame, but the issue is with the song’s lyrics.

Muqueet Khan, the complainant, said the song’s lyrics are hurtful towards religious sentiments of those who follow Prophet Mohammad. He said,

“I tried to sing the song and when I checked the translation, it was about Prophet Mohammad. A girl and boy are romancing but linking background with religious sentiments.”

He has refused to take back his complaint at any cost. He even added,

“I will not take back my complaint. I have checked on Youtube and then filed my complaint”

In response to the complaint, the director of the film Omar Lulu said these are false claims. He said,

“There is nothing against Islam or Muslims. It is a very old love song sung by all communities.”

Well, it’s true. The song is a recreation of an old song. I am no expert in language or religion, so I really can’t argue about who is right. But maybe we should all accept art and music as it comes, without intending or taking offence to any religion.
