Yesterday, we shared unconfirmed reports of a blanket ban on porn sites across India. Sadly, now we confirm.
Indian Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have received a notice from Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to ban 857 sites, most of them including porn sites.
857 is a huge number. This is the highest number of sites till date that has been banned by DoT. A senior manager of an ISP, who did not want to be named, told Legally India, “It’s a list of 857 URLs. Most of the sites [on the list] are pornographic. I would say 100% of the sites.”
Mint reports that 3 telecom operators have also confirmed the block, which would take effect from Monday
However, as reported by us yesterday, users of Airtel, Tikona & YOU broadband are still able to access these sites. Maybe, the block would take sometime to take its effect.
People on Twitter is on the offensive ever since unconfirmed reports started pouring in
Now that Yakub Memon is hanged, there won’t terrorism in India. Now that porn has been banned, there won’t be rapes in India. #PornBan

It’s worth mentioning that Supreme Court has earlier stated that adults watching porn in the confines of their home is not a crime.
Chief Justice HL Dattu had said, “Such interim orders cannot be passed by this court. Somebody may come to the court and say look I am above 18 and how can you stop me from watching it within the four walls of my room. It is a violation of Article 21 [right to personal liberty].”
In the end, we just want to say one thing to the authorities
Who cares? Challenge accepted.
