‘When A Girl Called Twinkle’ And Akshay Kumar Endlessly Chased ‘PadMan’ For Movie Rights!

Known as India’s ‘Menstrual Man’, Padma Shri Arunachalam Muruganantham, has done revolutionary work in making low-cost sanitary napkins for Indian women and has been struggling for over two decades.

Then (1998), even talking about menstruation was considered a taboo, but he sparked a movement where he invented a low-cost sanitary pad-making machine. His is such an inspiring tale that Twinkle Khanna has cast hubby Akshay Kumar to star in the R.Balki directorial produced by her production house.

But, ask the real-life ‘PadMan‘ how did he wind up joining hands with Mrs Funnybones Movies? He tells Mid Day,

“This is not one of those movies that happened in a day or a week. It took us nearly one-and-a-half years to give it shape. A girl called Twinkle (Khanna) had been chasing me endlessly for rights.”

He admitted that Twinkle basically stalked him to the core. He said,

“She tracked my every move. She desperately tried to reach me even when I was in Malaysia and the US. She finally caught me in London. My friends were curious about why Twinkle would want to meet me. It was only then that I learnt she is Rajesh Khanna’s daughter. I remember telling her, ‘Akshay Kumar has also been trying to get me for rights’. She laughed and said, ‘Yes, he is my husband’.”

Well, not only did he not know Twinkle and Akshay, Muruganantham couldn’t recognise R.Balki,

“She came with a man I’d never seen or heard of earlier. We had lunch and spoke at length about the story. The man wanted to smoke and I, as a rule, send all smokers downstairs. He was spotted by my neighbours, who told me the next day that he was renowned filmmaker Balki. Everyone knew him as he’d directed Kareena Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan.”

Though he had Hollywood aspirations for his story, he just couldn’t turn down this offer.

“I rarely watch Hindi films, but after meeting Akshay, I watched ‘Airlift’ and ‘Baby’. I didn’t want to give the rights to anyone in India. I wanted this story to reach the world. But, I didn’t have the heart to turn down Akshay and Twinkle.”

Muruganantham is really excited about the fictionalised biopic where a mainstream Bollywood actor would be talking about menstruation and female hygiene.

Even, the last chapter in Mrs Funnybones’ new book ‘The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad’ told the tale of a village simpleton and his cause of making affordable sanitary napkins for women in his village.
