Nawazuddin Calls Out Racism In Bollywood With His ‘Dark And Not Good Looking’ Tweet

Nawazuddin-Siddiqui

Arey hero! Gora, chitta, lamba, you look like a Bollywood hero, you should try your hand at films.

Hey fair-and-handsome guys, how many of you have heard this from your relatives or friends? I am guessing quite a lot. But how many of the dark-skinned-not-so-tall men have heard this? We are guessing the numbers are few. Because, for example, in Bollywood films, the TDH (tall, dark and handsome) and TFH (tall, fair and handsome) men woo the ladies (heroines). With looks. And, your character and personality are secondary determinants.

Racism, much? Well, that’s been the age old mantra in B-Town and the films. Hinting at it in a very cryptic way is the Raees star Nawazuddin Siddiqui. He tweeted,

And, people have been trying to putting two and two together, since then. But not very long ago, it was in an old interview Nawaz had said that there’s no racism in Bollywood and it’s the talent that matters. What changed that, Nawaz?

But, Tweeple came in support of him instantly.

She told him that he’s about acting and not about looks.

This guy defined how a man becomes good-looking by character.

And, some had a funny take too on the situation.

While others just pointed out how proud they were of Nawaz’s looks.

Some negated his statement of him not being handsome with old photoshoots. In which, he looked really handsome, TBH!

In case you are still wondering what made Nawaz tweet such an ambiguous tweet. Then, hold up. We think we quite know what it can be.

Is it the casting director of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, Sanjay Chouhan’s comment to Deccan Chronicle about how people were cast in the film keeping Nawaz’s look in mind?

“Keeping Nawaz in mind, all other characters were taken on board. We can’t cast fair and handsome people with Nawaz. It would look so weird. You have to take people with distinct features and personalities when pairing them with him.”

Earlier Chitrangada Singh was cast opposite Nawaz, but she left the project abruptly. And, it was then Bidita Bag was paired opposite the enigmatic Nawaz.

Though there are umpteen examples of dark and handsome men in the industry, we are still a long way from accepting SDH (short, dark and handsome) men in conventional Bollywood films as “heroes”. Hoping that changes damn soon.
