In A Desperate Attempt To Save Their Lives, Farmers In MP Are Selling Their Children

The conditions of Indian farmers have never been very good. Laden with debts and dependent on nature for good crops, they often take drastic measures like committing suicide, if crops get damaged.

This year has been particularly bad for the farmers in Madhya Pradesh. Unseasonal rain with hail storm has destroyed crops heavily, and they are now forced to sell or pawn their children for money.

The farmers in Mohanpura village are selling their children to shepherds for Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000 to repay previous debts and harvest crops for next time, despite knowing that the children could be abused.

In an interview with a news channel, the farmers told about the horrible conditions that forced them to take such a decision.

Five children were rescued and taken into a shelter after almost eight months of being sold. The kids were initially reluctant to go back to their homes fearing their parents’ reactions. Officials said that the shepherds, who bought those children, have been taken into custody and are awaiting trial.
