Turning a good book into a successful, and by successful I mean living up to the reader’s expectations, movie is a tough job. And it just becomes tougher when it comes to turning a graphic novel into a film. Graphic books already paint the visual into the reader’s mind, so the filmmakers are forced to make every detail just as same and just as perfect.
Since so many movie adaptations of comics and graphic novels are about to come out, I thought it’s about time we revisit some of the not-so-famous, but no less fantastic movies that were made from graphic books in the past. Watch these 11 movies, you won’t regret. But do read the books as well!
1. V For Vendetta
Alan Moore’s cult graphic novel was turned into a mindblowing rad movie starring Natalie Portman.
2. Blue is the Warmest Color
Termed as the best movie of 2013, this French graphic novel was turned into a movie that was a delight for both the eyes and the mind. Watch it. Now.
3. Coraline
A Neil Gaiman book for children turned into a movie that will make even adults scared of turning off their lights at night!
4. Persepolis
This is not a book, turned into a movie. This is a legacy created by Marjane Satrapi. You want to consider yourself as an aware human? Read the book. Watch the movie.
5. Kick-ass
“Sickening violence: just the way you like it.” Oh trust me, you Will like the saga of this super-powerless superhero.
6. Chicken With Plums
Anothem gem from Marjane Satrapi’s literary mine.
7. Red
Two words – Kickass action.
8. The league of Extraordinary Gentlemen
The “Justice League of Victorian England”, this is another creation of the extraordinary artist Alan Moore. And Naseeruddin Shah stars in the movie version. I don’t think I need to give you any more reasons.
9. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
It ain’t easy to battle with your girlfriend’s exes, especially if they happen to be evil, literally, and 7 in number. But hey, it’s Scott Pilgrim we’re talking about! And Michael Kera as Scott Pilgrim we are talking about! We are done talking now, let’s begin the watching.
10. Road to Perdition
Action thriller. Comics by DC. Movie starring Tom Hanks, Daniel Craig, and Jude Law. I rest my case.
11. Jumanji
Sure, you must have seen the Robin Williams starred movie, and probably the cartoon series too. But did you know that the movie was made from a childrens’ picture book?
The days are cold and full of rain. And you must get ready with your blanket, laptop and that steaming mug of hot chocolate!
