9 Lesser Known Bengali Sweets That Are Absolutely Mouth-Watering

You must have had roshogolla at least once, right? God forbid, if you haven’t, then there’s no point of your existence! But roshogolla and sondesh aren’t the only wonderful creations that Bengal can boast of. In terms of how to have sweets, no other province knows better than Bengal (and I shall not take my words back, no matter what you say). Sadly, many of the sweets are not as famous as their fluffy white relatives!

So check out these 9 lesser known sweets from Bengal that you have to try!

Made with moong dal, this form of the widely known jalebis isn’t widely available even in Bengal anymore. Rich in taste, colour and texture, this sweet will make you question the very point of your existence before trying it. Life will never be the same again!

This tough big sister of the well known gulab jamun can give the younger sister a run for its money anyday! Round, dark, deep fried and beautiful, this baby can make you gulp like a guppy just at one bite!

Lobongo lotika in Bengali generally refers to a beautiful slender girl. And the sweet of the same name is no less (even more actually) fabulous! Concentrated khoya wrapped in wheat beds only to be deep fried and dipped in sugar syrup… I think I’m gonna leave the rest to your imagination.

5. Gokul pithe

Here are just some sweetmeats made from a mix of khoya and coconut stuffing and deep fried and soaked in sugar syrup. No big deal you know!

6. Sar bhaja

‘Sar’ is the cream of milk, and ‘sarbhaaja’ means fried cream of milk. This beautiful creation of god is made by deep frying a thick batter made of cream of milk, khoya and chhena. And it tastes twice as good as it looks!

7. Joy nogorer moa

No bengali childhood is complete without the call of hawkers shouting “joyyy nogorer moaaaa” during winter afternoons. Made with nolen gur, khoi, ghee and other ingredients, this particular sweetmeat is only available during the winter months. All the more reason to have it, eh?

8. Makha sondesh

This beauty is basically sweetened ‘chhena’ (cottage cheese) with added flavours. This is also the key ingredient of various kinds of sondesh. How the sweet makers manage to even make sweets with this without eating it all up is a question I’ll never find answer to. Respect!

9. Pyanrah

Known as ‘peda’ or ‘pyanrah’, this super soft delicious treat is made with concentrated ‘khoya’ and various kinds of nuts and garnished with saffron sometimes. This sweet is perfect for those who can literally swim in the sea of sweetness.

Umm.. sweets, anyone?
