And now, they congratulated the Indian health workers on the elimination of the disease which usually occurs in newborns through infection of unclean deliveries and umbilical cord care practices.

PM Narendra Modi addressed for the first time at the 3rd Global Call to Action Summit 2015, which was attended by representatives from 24 countries and participated by over 600 delegates from across the world.

The two-day summit was hosted for the first time in India, and outside the US. The last two conclaves were organized in the US.

Paying rich tributes to the UPA government’s flagship programme the National Health Mission (NHM), Modi said:

“These remarkable successes in the field of maternal and child health have been possible through our National Health Mission. The Mission, with it’s urban and rural health components — perhaps one of the largest public health programmes in the world — has resulted in improved health outcomes. 52% per cent of India’s under-five mortality is contributed to by deaths of newborns in the first month of life. Under NHM, our approach emphasises a continuum of newborn care both at the community and facility level.”

According to WHO, there are 24 countries that make up 36% of the world population and at the same time responsible for 70% of child and maternal deaths. Even today, the world loses about 289,000 mothers and 6.3 million under-five children every year.

India’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) stands at 40 while the Mother Mortality Rate (MMR) stands at 167. In 1990, the IMR was 380, and the MMR was 540.

Congratulations, India. We are a big nation and it takes time, but we achieve anything and everything.
