Here’s How The ‘Best Picture Goof-up’ At The Oscars Actually Happened!

So, the 89th Academy Awards concluded with a bang, no one was expecting. They announced ‘La La Land’ to have won the Best Picture Award when in reality ‘Moonlight’ was the actual winner. Major uh-oh!

Announced by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, 1967’s classic ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ stars, the goof-up shook the crowd and the viewers.

It might remind you of Steve Harvey and the Miss Universe 2015 faux pas. But this was on a much bigger scale. It was the Oscars and, we’re pretty sure, this is going down in the history of award shows.

But, here’s what actually happened.

While the cast and crew of ‘La La Land’ were on-stage — grinning ear-to-ear over what they thought to be the seventh and the biggest win in the Best Picture category — there was a visible commotion, one could see.

Beatty was seen on the stage with an envelope. And, it was revealed that not ‘La La Land’, but ‘Moonlight’ bagged the award.

Host Jimmy Kimmel even probed Beatty by saying,

“What did you do, Warren?”

Then, Beatty told the audience how they had the wrong envelope, upon opening which it read “Emma Stone” (who had bagged the Best Actress Award, just a few minutes ago). When he turned to Dunaway, she read the winner before Beatty could stop her.

“I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land. That’s why I looked at Faye, and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny.”

Even when Warren was about to announce we could see there was something fishy.

His expression was pretty confusing.

He then turned to Faye because it read ‘Emma Stone’.

And, before he could stop her Faye announced the big win to be ‘La La Land’, which lead to a roaring applause from the crowd.

The Academy’s social media handles too made the announcement of La La Land‘s win. Several minutes later, they posted ‘Moonlight’ as the Best Picture.

Well, we know it is a major blunder on the part of the Academy’s but it was not the presenters’ fault. But, this sure will be remembered for times to come. Today is a field day for netizens and there are countless memes circling the web.

I am heartbroken and can’t begin to imagine the disappointment the whole cast and crew of ‘La La Land’ must be facing right now.

Here’s the video of the goof-up clip.

It sure looks like that “Bonnie and Clyde did pull off one last heist”! ?
