Kerala Police Chief Says That PDA Is NOT Illegal And Couples In Public Should Be Left Alone

Stories of police or extremist political parties harassing couples in parks is a common story in India.

Couples in love, just holding hands are looked as criminals, which is strange because what they are doing is consensual and very natural. On the other hand, one asks the question, shouldn’t the police be preventing rapes from happening, instead of spending time searching for couples making out in a park?

This question was asked when a Kerala couple went live on Facebook as they were harassed by cops. The video went viral on Facebook, and Kerala police was critisized for wasting their time on moral policing instead of actual policing.

Vishnu Vichu was in the park with his female friend and his only ‘crime’ was that he had his hand around his friend.

The police claimed that he was indulging in vulgar activities which he vehemently denied.

The Kerala Police Chief had to step in to save the day and his comments are very encouraging.

Loknath Behera has come out in defense of the couples in love by saying that this kind of moral policing is bad and there is no law against public display of affection. He has even ordered an inquiry into the incident.

“No one has the right to disturb or harass any couple anywhere, more so in public places.”

He further said that Indians frown down upon public affection due to culture and tradition but it is absolutely NOT illegal.

This is a good statement by the Kerala Police chief because if people can smoke and even piss in public in India and quite freely at that, we should be allowed to hold hands in the least.

Fingers crossed that the rest of Indian police takes heed of this statement.
