Kerala Activist’s Body Chopped With Swords For Raising Voice Against Drug Mafia

Protest can spur change, but can also lead to a destructive backlash.

Kochi, known as the commercial capital of Kerala, has lately earned the dubious distinction of becoming the epicentre of drug mafia in the state.

And now Jayakumar R Pillai, a social activist, who single-handedly took up a fight against the drug mafia at his village near Alappuzha district of Kerala, paid a price for it in the process.

On June 5, while he was returning after closing his gym, he was attacked by at 7 to 10 people with swords. His whole body was chopped off after he started campaigning against the drug mafia, which also involved youths and college student. He is suffering in the ICU for the past 2 weeks.

He has been left battered in a hospital following the brutal attack and doctors say that the 36-year-old activist would take at least a year to recover from the attack, but he may still struggle to walk.

In spite of the attack, he has urged the government to make stern rules to stop the illegal import of drugs.

Hats off to Pillai for being brave enough to protest. He didn’t only draw the attention to the heinous crimes but also tried to bring substantial changes to the society.
