Fat or body-shaming is a shame that the modern civilisation is fighting with, a global one at that. While these battles might give the haters an excuse to feel good about themselves, the other side borders bullying. And I say this with personal experience, bullying stagnates childhood.

If you ask for examples, I have a list of people I know (including yours truly) who have been subjected to contemptuous eyes, courtesy of bullying and body-shaming. But would you believe if I say, Hollywood beauty, Kate Winslet had to go through the same growing up? Well, please do. Kate recently spoke at a charity event in London and

Oscar-winner, Kate Winslet recently spoke at a charity event in London and confessed to being a victim of bullying at school. It got so bad, she was even locked in cupboards and called ‘blubber’.

“I was always comparing myself to others. They called me ‘blubber’, they teased me for wanting to act. Locked me in the cupboard and would laugh at me.”

“I wasn’t the prettiest. I was even told that I might be lucky with my acting. If I was happy to settle for the fat girl parts.  All because I didn’t fit into someone else’s idea of ‘perfect’.”

Kate appeared in front of thousands of schoolchildren as part of WE Day UK.

But luckily, her love for acting overshadowed all the negativity and hate she faced because she was ‘over-sized.’

“I was always auditioning for the school plays. I didn’t really get very good parts, mind you, but I didn’t mind. I didn’t care. I would often get cast as the crocodile or the scarecrow or the dark fairy. I was even a dancing frog once. But it didn’t matter. I still loved it. I loved acting. It didn’t matter how big or small the parts were. I wanted to be great. and I was determined to keep learning.”

And then when ‘Titanic’ happened, Kate aka Rose had the last laugh.

“The most unlikely candidate, Kate from the sandwich shop in Reading, suddenly acting in one of the biggest movies ever made!”

Here’s a little advice from the diva herself.

Imagine, if she had taken to the bullying and quit on her dreams of becoming an actress? ‘Titanic’ would have never been the same. Taking cues? Me too. 🙂
