Growing up, I had always found hockey to be an interesting sport and hockey has been one of the sports which India dominated once upon a time.
Jugraj was the first world class drag-flick expert that India had produced and established himself as an explosive left back in world hockey.
Sohail Abbas, the highest goal scorer in the history of hockey, once said that when he saw Jugraj drag-flick, he saw a younger version of himself.
After his hockey career was cut short due to a fatal car accident, he did not stop himself from contributing to the nation. He joined the Punjab police and presently he is the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and is posted in Amritsar district.
A few days back, he played an active role in the day-long operation against three terrorists in Gurdaspur district’s Dinanagar town and gunned down 3Â heavily armed terrorists.
The police force from Gurdaspur’s neighbouring districts was summoned to take part in the pre-dawn anti-terrorist operation in Dinanagar which borders Pakistan. The former hockey star fired several rounds from his firearm at the terrorists who were holed up in the police station complex, eventually killing all 3 terrorists.
I have seen Indian Hockey plunge to new depths since the last decade. It saddens me deeply, but I am proud of Jugraj Singh for he did not give up and is still doing something for the country.
Indeed, a true youth-icon, not only for the youth of Punjab, or of India but for the whole world.
