LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual) rights of people have been criticized for a long time. It has been under the scanner for too long. People have come up with derogatory statements that these people need to be cured. People falling in this category have faced controversies and problems which are appalling. Very few of them are ready to accept them as they are.
And then there’s Ireland. A country, which has decided to put aside these issues pertaining to these people, became the first one to legalize gay marriage and that too in one popular landslide vote!
The Republic of Ireland voted to legalize marriage between all persons regardless of their sex, thus ushering in a new era of LGBT rights
New laws are expected to be passed by the Dáil( the lower house of the parliament of The Republic of Ireland) before the summer recess, with couples obliged to give a registrar the standard three month notification of a wedding day.
“I think we do need to take this result and advance it but to advance it internationally rather than domestically,” said Eamon Gilmore, a former Labour Party leader.
David Quinn, the director of the socially conservative Iona Institute politely conceded the vote and tweeted:
Congratulations to the Yes side. Well done. #MarRef
