14 YO Pours Gulal On Classmate In Holi Prank, Family Alleges It Was Sindoor, Boy Booked

Holi is almost here and kids are already throwing coloured water balloons and coloured water on each other and passers-by to enjoy the essence of the festival. This time of the year is when we play a lot of pranks on each other, only to shrug it off and say “Bura na maano Holi hai!

However, a recent prank played by a 14-year-old boy garnered so much ire from the family of the person he played a prank with, that they took legal action on the boy. Yes, as unbelievable as it sounds, this actually happened.

In a prank, a class 8 student poured gulal, or coloured powder, on the head of a classmate but it soon turned on its head. The incident occurred in Mehchana under Farukhnagar sub-town of Gurugram district when both the children were on the way to school, on Monday.

The girl allegedly informed her family that her classmate intentionally and forcibly poured sindur on her, something worn by Hindu married women. The family of the girl then approached the local police station and lodged a criminal FIR against the boy.

The girl’s maternal grandfather believed that the boy had poured sindoor on her head and not gulal. The boy’s mother and the rest of his family were shocked at the allegation and spoke to India Today. She said,

“Boys of his age generally have huge curiosity and excitement about festivals such as Holi and Diwali and begin celebrating much before the actual date.

He poured gulal on her, thinking about Holi celebrations and he did not have any other intention. He is innocent and has been framed by the other side just because he had poured gulal. “

She further added that her son was just 14 years old and it would be unfair to assume that such a young boy would have the knowledge and understand the significance of sindoor. The police also visited the location of the incident and took pictures of the red powder.

As per latest developments, the Gurugram police has booked the 14-year-old boy under non-bailable sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, which decided that he be sent to an observational home in Faridabad for two weeks.

What do you think about this whole fiasco? Was it too hasty to have punished the boy for such an allegation without giving him the benefit of the doubt? Let us know.
