Guwahati Couple Asks Guests To Bring Stationery Instead Of Wedding Gifts, Donates To NGO

Marriage is regarded to be a sacred bond between two people and since you get married only once, people tend to spend a bomb to make their wedding as grand as possible. But, this Guwahati couple chose to stray away from the crowd and make a beautiful, selfless gesture on the day which marked their union.

Paloma Dutta and Ved invited their near and dear ones to their wedding with a card, the contents of which has warmed our hearts. The card bore a request to their guests to not come to the wedding with expensive gifts but with crayons, coloured blocks etc so they could be donated to an NGO in Guwahati, Assam.

The NGO which works towards the rehabilitation, education, advocacy and awareness as well as protection of rights and legal aid for children with special needs.

Paloma spoke to Storypick and told us that the couple took a collective decision to include the happiness of the little children with their own. She said,

“We have always tried to help people and took this as an opportunity to do the same. Since it is difficult to get donations for a cause we support individually, we thought it was the perfect time to do it.”

“Our agenda was to bring some positivity and we wanted to make it extra special by including others.”

Their families were as much a part of the novel idea as they were and spared no effort to get in touch with the NGO. Elaborating on the same, she said,

“Our family was very supportive and did all the groundwork since we don’t live in Guwahati. As soon as we got in touch with the Ngo everything fell into place.”

She posted on Facebook about the overwhelming response they received from their guests where they collected around ₹85,000 in cash contributions and 80 percent of their gifts were for the children of the NGO.

Their selfless act has definitely set a precedent for other people who, instead of gifting expensive bowls and showpieces, can take inspiration from this couple and spread some happiness because, as Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
