This Bangalore Couple Had A Zero-Waste And An Eco-Friendly Wedding. What An Idea!

You know how exorbitant and lavish Indian weddings are: Innumerable guests, the unreasonable quantity and varieties of food, and high-priced gifts are something that has to be there that deems the wedding ‘nice’.

But this Bangalore couple opted for an environment-friendly wedding.

The wedding reception of Soumya Reddy and Abhishek was an eco-friendly one.

Soumya Reddy is a vegan animals rights activist and environmentalist and the daughter of Karnataka’s Transport Minister, R Ramalinga Reddy. The wedding reception was organised at Bangalore Main Palace on 26 November 2015.

And thus, she decided that her wedding would be the perfect occasion to put all those into use.

Here are some things that were different in this wedding:

1. Zero-waste wedding

How did she manage this?

She stationed more than 150 staff members of Bangalore-based trained waste pickers. They made sure the waste got sequestered and nothing went to the landfills.

”Soumya wanted to make it as eco-friendly as possible. The food waste will go to a private bio-methanation plant on Magadi Road. Dry waste will be taken to other collection centres. Our aim was to ensure there is no flower waste at all,” Marwan Abubaker, co-founder of Bangalore-based waste pickers company.

2. Vegan wedding? Totally!

Since she is a vegan herself (vegans are strict vegetarians who don’t consume dairy products, eggs, or any other product derived from an animal), she made sure that the menu also contained vegan dishes.  Milk products like ghee, milk and curd weren’t used by the food caterers. Instead, coconut juice, soya bean milk, and soya bean yoghurt were chosen.

If someone wanted tea or coffee, it was prepared from soya bean milk.

3. And lastly, the eco-friendly way was also maintained

  1. Plastic cups were replaced by steel and melamine cutlery.
  2. Floral decorations included flowers made of paper.
  3. The invitation cards were made from recycled paper, which clearly stated ”No gifts or bouquets”. Some cards were emailed.
  4. The guests were given return gifts, but wait, it is not what you are thinking! The guests went home with saplings of plants like sandalwood, rosewood, mahogany, jackfruit and neem.
  5. Even the attire and cosmetics used were eco-friendly!

Isn’t this way just beautiful? In an era when people just discuss these measures but don’t implement it, weddings like these prove that change can be brought if one is willing to!

Congratulations Soumya and Abhishek. Way to go!
