Sunil’s family has been working as scavengers for past many years and to get himself out of that vicious cycle, he decided to study in the last nine ears. “We were born as scavengers. Right from our birth we have been slaves. We never really had any rights. We are trying to get out of it, and there is only one way to do that. Baba Saheb Ambedkar said ‘if you study, you will grow’, but people still don’t accept us,” said Mr Yadav.

When Sunil got down into a drain on the first day of his work, the dead animals and smell didn’t leave his mind. That’s when he decided that he will get himself out of this mess and will not work as a manual scavenger. He funded his own education by working at a municipal body from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am and studied during the day. “Even though BMC rules state I am entitled to a study leave, it took me 18 months to get it approved”, he added.
